Colbri was founded in 1968 and is headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1971, Fred Levinger and his father purchased the company. Levinger went on to form the Colibri Group which makes and markets jewelry, lighters, clocks and accessories. Colibri sells its products through thousands of independent retailers and also large corporations, like Wal-Mart and Zales. The Colibri Group umbrella includes Colibri, Dolan & Bullock, Kreisler, Krementz, Linden, Princess Pride, S.T. DuPont, Seth Thomas (which happens to be oldest the oldest clock brand in America, founded in Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut in 1813). In June of 2005, Levinger sold a majority interest to Founders Equity Inc., and Main Street Resources. Levinger remained on as CEO and President.
The Quantum Trifecta is the first three burner to use the patented Colibri SST ignition. It’s wind resistant and and can light an object one inch away. This handy when one of my cigar buddies brings over some monster Churchill (here’s a quick guide on cigar shapes and sizes), where using the old wooden match produces nothing but burned fingers and frustration. The ignition device is stingy with butane, and doesn’t need a battery, wick or flint. I also like the extra large fuel reservoir. The trio of flames are robust and blue, and make quick work of even an overly humidified cigar. The lighter comes with a case, which has saved mine catching a few scratches when carried in the same pockets as the car keys. Overall I’ve been very pleased with my Trifecta. I do have a bit of advice however. Be sure to use the Colibri butane, or a good triple filtered butane. Using the “cheap stuff” will eventually clog the jets, leading to poor performance. Like everything in life, it pays to buy quality first.
